History

Little is known about the origins of Moresco. In Roman times in its territory there were important settlements which were replaced by feuds and monasteries in the Longobard age. One of these feuds prevailed over the others becoming the only residential place for the population once scattered all around the territory.

Little is known, also, about the origin of the name. It may be named after a Lord called Morico or it may come from the place-name morro or moro which stands for a stony or also marshy land.

A certain Count Tebaldo di Moresco is mentioned in some papers of the twelwth century. A century later the castle becomes a property of the city of Fermo. It passes in the hands of Federico II and later to king Manfredi untill the city rebuys it from two private citizens in 1266. From then on it will remain a property of the city of Fermo until the reunification of Italy, except for a brief time under the Napoleonic rule.

Set its inhabitants free from the feudal boundage, Moresco becomes a Free-City and it is ruled by a town-council (Consiglio dei Massari) and a reggent (vicario) appointed by the city of Fermo.

In the sixteenth century, at the time of its greatest splendour, Moresco grows rich with many churches and works of art.

In 1869 Moresco looses its autonomy and passes under the administration of Monterubbiano until 1910 when it returns to be an independent town.
