The name of the village Moresco Vecchio
would prove right the popular opinion according to which the
original castle would stand by the river Aso and not on the
hilltop as we see it today.
The castle
name has nourished various legends concerning its foundation. One
of this legends tells that it was a group of Saracens at the
command of Robert the Guiscard who settled there and gave rise to
the village. These Moors later devoloped the breeding of silkworm
in the area and thus the growing of the mulberry-tree, which
could have given the name to Moresco (in italian the name of the
tree is moro-gelso).
According to another legend the fortress was wanted by Montepulciano or by Fermo as a bulwark against the Moor invasions, hence the name Moresco castle.
Because of its position and its stout defensive structure, in the castle would often find shelter the nobles from Fermo to escape the plague, but mostly the assaults and the wars between feuds.
In 1481 Pellegrino Morroni, however, persuaded by snare to leave the castle, was murdered by killers from Monterubbio.
The other people from Fermo sheltering in the castles nearby and worried for their safety, asked for heavy punishments. The guilty, arrested after a siege by Monterubiano were taken to Fermo and put in the pillory as punishment. Then they were chopped and their corps left to everybody's sight for many days.
