University

Already in 1200 Camerino could count on the presence of superior schools for the study of civil and canon law, medicine and literature. In 1321 the poet and jurist Cino Da Pistoia, a friend of Dante Aligheri, is offered a teaching post by the city of Siena.

On 20 September 1336 the apostolic nuncio Bertrande de Deaulx, grants the city of Camerino the faculty to appoint the capitains of art and the notarial counsellor of the Curia.

In 1377 Pope Gregory XI, expecting military aids from the lords of the city, the Da Varanos, turns the ancient school into a University.

On 15 July 1573, Pope Benedetto XIII issues a bull to institute the University with the new faculties of teology, law, medicine and mathematic.

On 13 April 1753 Francesco I d'Asburgo Lorena aknowledges the degrees issued by the Camerino University as valuable in the whole territory of the Sacred Roman Empire, conferring the Principal of the University the title of Conte Palatinus.

At the moment of the Italian reunification (1860) the university is recognized as free; the law of 13 March 1958, n. 254 turns it into a state university.
