Camerino

Placed on a spur on the Appennines at 670 metres above sea-level, Camerino achieves its period of greatest splendour under the rule of the Da Varano family.

From the top of its rock it dominates the large valleys of the rivers Chienti and Potenza underneath, occuppied by towers and fortresses.

But if the town might look austere, the countryside, instead, is colourful.

At its foot stretches a wide green valley enclosed by clevages rising to form a circle of mountains.

Only by keeping in mind its geographical position, it can be understood what was the importance of this Italian town. It is an ancient town, first tied to the city of Rome by an "aequo fodere", an alliance between equals, then turned into a Free City and remained a Dukedom for a long time. It was famous as a centre of learning, a tradition which the town mantains today with its university, its theatre, its libraries, despite its being only a small provincial town.

Recent studies, carried on by the scholars Berenson and Federico Zeri, have proved how Camerino, after a brilliant phase of prosperity between the end of 1300 and the first decades of 1400, entered a happy season, marked by remarkable individual peculiarities.

Giulio Cesare da Varano (1464-1502) made Camerino a great town, enriched with beautiful buildings and prospering with trade. The town "developed a pictoric language which went beyond the local aspects and had all the characteristics to be recognized as an entity of its own, to be ascribed as a specified chapter of the Italian fifteenth century" (F.Zeri)
