We do not have any certain information
about the origins of Arquata. Some scholars believe that it is
the ancient Surpicanum, situated between the two States of
the Tavola
Peuntingeriana, Ad
Martis and Ad Aquas.
The first pieces of information about Arquata date back to the eleventh century. In 1255 it willingly surrendered to Ascoli in exchange of full autonomy. During the fourteenth century it enjoyed of a certain independence from Ascoli, till 1429 when Pope Martino V gave Arquata and its district to the city of Norcia that had always striven against Ascoli for its possession.
After various events all along the course
of the century, Arquata remained a possession of Norcia till the
eighteenth century.
After the French invasion in 1809 the prefecture of Norcia was abolished and Arquata passed under the rule of Spoleto, chieftown of the Trasimeno Department. Arquata became the district chieftown. In that period the fortress was restored and furnished with casemates and emplacements for guns. A permanent garrison was left there and together with the fortresses of Spoleto and Perugia, it became the third fortalice of the Department.
After Napoleon's fall Arquata under the restored Papal government passed under the jurisdiction of Ascoli Piceno in 1832.
