Arcevia

Arcevia stands 535 metres above sea level, on the hilltop of Monte Cischiano, an offshot the Appenines on the Marches side.

Surrounded by green and in contact with nature, the city enjoys a mild climate and healthy air. That is why the town has always been a favourite holiday destination for many people.

Its territory, fertile and throughly cultivated,is arranged around many small villages scattered all along its extension.

The towns and the villages are mostly placed on hilltops or ontthe valleys along the rivers Misa and Cesano. From the chief town and from the near mountains of S.Angelo and Croce, you can enjoy both the wonderful view of the Adriatic coast and of the Appenines.

How to get there

The town wall

The town wall isaout one mile long and it bears the signs of different construction phases that succeeded along the centuries. The wall as it is today is due to Francesco Sforza, who commissioned its fortification from Roberto da S.Severino through an efficient systhem of keeps, ravelins and communication-trenches. Of the five originary entrance gates, only four are left today: those of S.Agostino, of S.Lucia,of S.Pietro,(or del Forno)and of the Sasso,which are still beautiful and stoute. On the highest pick of the Monte Cischiano,where today the Leopardi Gardens are, in ancient time stood Cassero, a fortress, the furthest city bulwark. It was destroyed to give place to the Monastery of the Capuchins, but its ruins are still visible today.

Spare time

Because of its landscape, every place is reccomended for walks and cycling tours. On the Monte della Croce and on the Monte S.Angelo you can find many paths and trails easy to walk along. There are many green fields suitable for pic-nics on the grass. Those who love riding will find many riding-grounds by the farmhouses, to set off to the discovery of the beautiful medieval castles.

The Leopardi Gardens are the green heart of Arcevia: a large and beautiful park rich of botanic varieties which no tourist can avoid to visit.

Gastronomy

The region can boast an ancient and rich cooking tradition. The food is genuine and homely made. You can eat a very good beef and lamb, delicious salami, cotechino, mazzafegati and a mean, but very tasty roast pig. Among the main dishes, the traditional vincisgrassi is something you should really try. Every feast and celebration has its own cakes and specialities, still made from ancient receipes such as the calcioni, pizza with cheese, fritellone, must biscuits, castagnole and ciambelle.

The hilly nature of the land is ideal for the production of valuable wines, like the Verdicchio dei Castelli from Jesi and the Rosso Piceno. Good wines are also in the villages of Le Conce, Piticchio, Nidastore as well as in many country houses.

The oil, also, is worthy of mention. It is produced at Piticchio. Not to be missed is the honey (Avacelli, S.Ginesio, Piticchio) and the cheese, which is very tasty. We want also to remind you that vegetables and fruits are grown throughout the countryside.

For the craft industry, the earthenware of La Costa is worthy of note.
